Frequently Asked Questions
I’ve never played mas before. Is this trip suitable for first-time Carnival goers?
Absolutely! Our trips are designed for all experience levels, from newbies to Carnival veterans, so are beginner-friendly with guided support, curated events, and clear expectations to help you feel confident and prepared. We help you with everything from costume selection to event flow and Carnival day logistics.
I’m coming alone. Will I feel awkward?
Our trips are designed for both solo travellers and small groups so many participants arrive solo. Our group structure facilitates connection, shared experiences, and a built-in community.
Is it safe for women?
Safety is a top priority. We use trusted drivers, group transportation, and carefully selected accommodations and events.
What kind of music and vibes should I expect?
You can expect predominantly high-energy soca and dancehall, Caribbean rhythms, colourful costumes, and vibrant island party energy throughout the weekend.
How physically demanding is Carnival in Jamaica?
There’s moderate physical activity. Road March involves several hours of walking and dancing, but the pace is manageable and includes breaks. Fetes involve dancing, but at your pace.
Which fetes are included?
The tentative list of fetes are included in the Itinerary section. The list is subject to change based on the final band and fete schedule.
Will there be time to relax outside of Carnival events?
Yes. The itinerary balances fetes and Carnival activities with downtime for rest, beach visits, and optional excursions.
What if I can’t keep up with the party pace?
Participation is always optional. Though rest time is built in, you choose to participate or forego an activity based on your energy level. Of course, we also encourage you to prepare beforehand and during the trip by exercising – regular walks are fine – hydrating, taking your vitamins and resting sufficiently.
Can I book without a costume?
Sure! You can choose to only participate in the fetes and excursions and skip or watch the parade from the sidelines.
However, you do need to book a package with one of the bands to enjoy the benefits that each has to offer (drinks, food, security, etc.). If you do not want to book a costume, you can choose the t-shirt package option which typically includes a tshirt, shorts and sometimes hat. Costume/T-shirt package purchase is separate from your trip package, and we provide guidance on selecting and securing your costume.
What if I want to play mas with a different band from the group?
You can play mas with whichever band you’d prefer. However, you won’t receive the package discount for playing with the J&W Band of the Year.
Is this trip worth the cost if I could plan it myself?
Yes. Carnival logistics are complex. Your package covers vetted accommodations, transportation, curated events, and on-ground support, saving you time, stress, and costly mistakes.
