What Is Jamaica Carnival?
Carnival in Jamaica, or Jamaica Carnival as it’s more commonly known, is an annual carnival celebration that typically takes place in Kingston and surrounding areas, culminating in a lively Road March weekend in April. While Jamaica is globally known for reggae and dancehall, carnival season spotlights soca music and Trinidad-style mas, infused with a uniquely Jamaican energy.
Compared to larger carnivals like Trinidad, Jamaica Carnival is:
- More compact and easier to navigate
- Highly social and party-focused
- Ideal for travelers who want carnival vibes without overwhelm
Jamaica Carnival Dates: When to Plan Your Trip
Jamaica Carnival usually happens in April, with events spread over several weeks. The main parade, i.e., Road March, takes place the Sunday after Easter.

- March – April: Weekly fetes and major events
- Road March Weekend (April): The main parade and biggest parties
Planning tip: Plan to arrive 2–3 days before Road March and stay 1–2 days after so you can enjoy both the parties and the parade without rushing. If you have the flexibility and/or PTO, arrive earlier to enjoy more events and allow time to explore Jamaica outside of carnival festivities.
